Objectives
We raise our animals just as if we would eat the beef ourselves; which we do - when Lisa runs low on beef she sends a subtle message to me, that "You need to keep one for us, we are out of meat!", but usually I already know because we have been eating liver, or ribs, or rump roast for the last few weeks.

Part of our slogan comes from a time long ago, when, grandfather raised a 300 pound hog. Time came to butcher it, so a neighbor (Jake Robinson) came over to help. Grandmother came out and looked at it hanging from the windmill tower and asked, "How did it get so big?" And Jake said, "Corn and time, Mrs. Rehfeld ...corn and time."

Experience
I have been raising cattle since the real early '70's, starting in 4-H. Our family has lived South of Arapahoe since 1918 or 1919, depending on when Grandpa arrived with the covered wagon and animals. I have been feeding beef out for sale since 1986 and before that I helped Dad feed cattle at their place. I used to sell to the big packers and the cattle that wouldn't fit on the truck were sold local. One year I sold so many that I didn't have enough to make a truckload and then we went completely to direct sales.
At one time we tried to keep up with the "technology advances" in cattle feeding, but with time and experience I grew to think that this wasn't working for me (maybe the packers and pharmaceutical companies, but not me) and I stopped using implants and the low-level antibiotics that were normal in the industry. Since we feed a balanced ration to more mature animals, we don't have the need for these additives. And, we've never fed animal by-products to our animals. Hay and grain and water are our stock-in-trade.
Our objective is to turn rain and sunshine into a good, healthful, nourishing protein.
More Experience
I was concerned that the beef would be good because we had grown up eating home-grown beef. Lisa told me that I shouldn't worry, because most all of our customers would never have eaten such good meat. And our second or third customer proved that, when he called and said he had asked his wife how they would tell the difference between ours and what they were buying at a Box Store. He called after the first bite and told me, "Don't worry. There is no comparision!"
We have a cross-section of customers; from lawyers, veterinarians, feed-lots operators (now there's a testimonial!!!), ranchers, to engineers, high tech technicians, surgeons, to the wonderful home-school mothers that are concerned about their families diets.

Education
  • ...We try to bring animals in and feed them so that we can take in 6 head a month. Sometimes, we run out or, like in July or August, we don't take any in because Mark in covered-up with animals from the area fairs. But, call 719-767-5269 or e-mail ronald@rehfeld.net to find out availability.
  • ...We deliver to the Front Range cities as part of our service. We determine a delivery date, based on when Otteman's finish processing and freezing, call customers, pack the Landcruiser full (FULL!!) and deliver your meat. We use cardboard boxes (about apple box size) to pack your meat and help insulate and make delivery efficient.
  • ...We treat our animals humanely. Our animals are on pasture with their mothers until weaning (around November), weaned on hay in the corrals, run on wheat pasture or stubble fields through the winter, summered on pasture and then brought in and fed to finish in our own little feedlot. We know how they are treated and fed, because we do it. It means a lot to us to know our animals are as comfortable and content as we can make them.

  • ...We live 12 miles south of Arapahoe, Colorado. 45 miles south of Burlington (I-70), 70 miles north of Lamar, 150 miles due east of Colorado Springs (HWY 40), 6 miles from Kansas and 10 miles east of Cheyenne Wells. It's not the end of the world, BUT... on a clear day you can see it!

  • Here is a comment from Commstock about the hamburger you are eating....# The shortage of cattle may be about over for this cycle but the shortage of hamburger is going to go on for a while yet. U.S. cow slaughter is not likely to pick up in the next couple years. Canadian cows won't be imported even when the border reopens. The U.S. beef herd will be slaughtering fewer cows when in expansion. The easing drought will also slow cow slaughter. Hamburger processors will be looking to import more ground beef to mix with U.S. tallow.
